WestSide Rowing Club & Frank Lloyd Wright Fontana Boathouse

In 2014 Sligo Rowing Club welcomed Mr. John W. Dorn of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fontana Boathouse (FBH) to Doorly Park. John who is on the board of FBH subsequently proposed & received approval for Sligo Rowing Club to become a sister club of not only FBH but also West Side Rowing Club (WSRC) both of which rowed on the Black Rock Canal off the Niagara River in Buffalo upstate New York. Like Sligo Rowing Club FBH was founded in 2006 whilst WSRC was founded in 1912 by Irish emigrants. Both FBH and WSRC have ancestral roots in Sligo and are regarded as prestigious clubs in the US with not only many national championships wins but also with Olympian rowers within their pedigree.

Sligo Rowing Club renewed old friendships when West Side Rowing Club once again visited the club and the Garavogue river last weekend after a 5-year interval.

West Side Rowing Club (WSRC) located in Buffalo, New York was founded by Irish emigrants with ancestral roots in county Sligo in 1912 and rows out on the Black Rock Channel off the Niagara River near the Canadian border.

Further to the 2014 visit of John(Jack)Dorn, President of neighboring Frank Lloyds Wright’s Fontana Boathouse (FBH) which like Sligo RC was also founded in 2006 and subsequent to Jacks proposal to the boards of WSRC & FBH all three clubs became sister clubs to establish a relationship to share our mutual interests in rowing.

West Side Rowing Club is a renowned club in the US of a significant pedigree with athletes from their club representing the United States at the Olympics, the Pan American Games, the World Youth Championships and the European Championships. West Side athletes have rowed in the 1936, 1956,1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 & 2016 Olympics with notably Tom Terhaar winning gold for his nation at the last three Olympics.
